With the Astral Plane now physically accessible, a torrent of new information has been collected on the entities known as Astral Copies.

— Excerpt from Astral Research compiled by Emily Pope

Astral Copies are one of the enemy types in Control. They are encountered in the Astral Plane in the main game and in the Foundation in The Foundation.

History[]

Astral Copies were initially encountered not in the Astral Plane, but in the Foundation, on September 14, 1964. Dr. Theodore Ash, Jr. referred to them as "the Id," after Freud's theory describing the primitive, basic, unconscious part of the personality. At the time they were, if not friendly, at least non-hostile. Ash even named a few of them: Hercules (Id #3), Adam, Lillith, Copernicus, and Mabel (Id #11). The Id showed Ash many depictions of an inverted black triangle painted onto the cave walls of the Foundation, his first exposure to what he later learned from Director Northmoor was The Board.

On October 29, the Id began to turn hostile, leading to two fatalities, and prompting the FBC to evacuate the Foundation. One of the last to leave, Ash claimed that he had become aware of hidden connections between Northmoor, The Nail, the Service Weapon, and the Id.

Once the Foundation had been abandoned and its existence classified, further encounters with the Id seemed to be limited to the Astral Plane. Their origins forgotten, they were renamed as Astral Copies.

Research Summary[]

According to reports compiled by Emily Pope, the Copies’ bodies are composed of dense dark gray stone-like material that is both resilient under controlled circumstances and brittle when struck with significant force. It is unclear whether the Astral Copies possess individual consciousness or are directed by a higher intelligence (such as the Board), however their shared aggression seems to indicate a unified goal.

Astral Copies appear during the 'training segments' in the Astral Plane that the player is transported to, whenever binding an Object of Power. Here, they seemingly fulfill the role of targets to for growing parautilitatians to practice newly gained abilities on. They can also be encountered in the Astral Bleeds in the Foundation, and are hostile to both the player as well as the Hiss enemies found there.

There is a variant of Astral Copies composed of a gold material; these variants are immune to direct attacks, and serve as special targets for Jesse to learn to use certain paranatural abilities (for example, using Seize on a dark gray Copy, and then that gray Copy can attack the gold Copy).
