The Bright Falls AWE was an Altered World Event which occurred in the town of Bright Falls, Washington between September 1 and September 14, 2010. It is believed to be connected to the Typewritten Page and Oh Deer Diner Coffee Thermos Altered Items.
Event Summary Edit
The AWE was caused by a Threshold located beneath Cauldron Lake, a lake near the town of Bright Falls. As a result of this Threshold, an AWE occurred in which the writings of fiction novelist Alan Wake altered reality to match the reality of the story, though only locally and for a limited time. Kirklund, the Bureau's Head of Investigations, was contacted on September 13, 2010 by ex-Bureau agent Frank Breaker about the possible AWE. Breaker had been contacted by Wake's literary agent Barry Wheeler on behalf of Breaker's daughter Sarah, the sheriff of Bright Falls. According to the Bureau case file, similar AWE incidents had been investigated in Bright Falls in 1970, 1976, and 1978.
The Bureau arrived at Bright Falls on September 15 after the AWE had already concluded. Interviews were conducted with witnesses; similar interviews had occurred during the prior incidents, with Thomas Zane in 1970 and Odin and Tor Anderson in 1976 and 1978. Wake's wife Alice was given a psychological evaluation and directed to treatment for trauma and apparent memory loss. The Bureau concluded that she had been trapped in the Threshold during the AWE. Those still missing included FBI Special Agent Robert Nightingale and Dr. Emil Hartman, the latter being someone whom the Bureau had been monitoring. Clay Steward, the author of a book entitled The Alan Wake Files, was interviewed as a suspected parautilitarian, resulting in the Bureau placing him under indefinite surveillance.
Wake's whereabouts after the AWE were unknown to the Bureau; he reportedly dove into Cauldron Lake, though his body was not recovered. Bureau researchers believe the AWE to have been the result of a "forceful perception of subjective reality" stemming from Wake and overlapping on ordinary reality. Wake was flagged by the Bureau as a potential parautilitarian and Prime Candidate. Eyewitness reports highlighted an old light switch, possible an Object of Power, the whereabouts of which are unknown. A monitoring station was established at Cauldron Lake to alert the Bureau of any future activity.
