Synopsis[]
| “ | After years in confinement at the hands of the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), Dylan Faden’s former captors are deploying him at the peak of a supernatural crisis.
Charged with combating a mysterious cosmic entity as it alters fundamental aspects of our reality, Dylan must harness his new-found powers to take the fight to the myriad threats overwhelming Manhattan. On the path to unlocking the full potential of his supernatural abilities Dylan will also seek out his sister, FBC Director Jesse Faden, as he bids to comprehend and contain the dangers that have spilled beyond the confines of the Oldest House to tear our world apart. |
” |
CONTROL Resonant takes place in a paranaturally-altered Manhattan, New York City, sometime after the events of Control, as the threats once contained in the Oldest House have now spilled out and are reshaping reality. Faced with this crisis, Dylan Faden is released from his captivity by the Federal Bureau of Control in the Oldest House to combat the various paranatural threats across Manhattan. He is given access to a shape-shifting supernatural weapon, the Aberrant, which takes a number of melee forms, as well as his own paranatural abilities. Along the way, Dylan also searches for his sister Jesse Faden, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Control.
CONTROL Resonant is described as a stand-alone game to Control, featuring Dylan's own journey into the (outside) world, in an inverse of Jesse's journey into the world inside the Oldest House in Control.
Gameplay[]
CONTROL Resonant is described as an "open-ended action-adventure RPG, in which you will be able to choose how you play and tailor your combat style to your liking." It is "built for fans of narrative-rich action-RPGs and players who enjoy mind-bending worlds, atmospheric storytelling, and high-intensity supernatural action." It is not an open-world game, but it is described as being the most expansive game produced by Remedy thus far, having a "large open-ended" world with multiple distinct locations.[1][2]
Players will control Dylan Faden, who primarily fights in melee combat using the Aberrant, a "crude" shape-shifting weapon with many forms, aided by his paranatural abilities. Per game director Mikael Kasurinen, combat will feature "fast-paced traversal in warped environments; wild, unpredictable enemies; and mind-bending powers and weapons;" and enemies will have "agency that matches what the player can do," including walking in the same environments as the player, jumping or flying between platforms, having many paranatural attacks, and coming in many shapes and sizes.[2]
Kasurinen has also said that the game will feature various human civilians and FBC personnel, as well as non-FBC factions attempting to gain control over Manhattan.[2]
The game will evidently feature some manner of equippable apparel, as currently, the website for CONTROL Resonant states that players who sign up for Remedy's Control newsletters will receive two exclusive items, the Communications Department Headset and the Optical Filtering Goggles, for use upon the game's launch.
Development[]
In June 2021, Remedy Entertainment first reported that it had entered an agreement with 505 Games to work on FBC: Firebreak (then referred to as codename Condor) as well as "to further expand the Control franchise with a bigger-budget Control game, to be agreed in more detail in the future."[3] In May 2022, this project was listed as codename Heron, and was described as being in an early concept stage.[4]
Heron was first revealed as Control 2 on November 11, 2022, with Remedy stating that it would be co-developed and co-published by Remedy and 505 Games, with Mikael Kasurinen returning as director for the Control franchise, and that it would continue to use the Northlight game engine.[5][6] A piece of concept art was revealed with the announcement, seemingly showing a street outside the Oldest House.
Remedy's then-CEO Tero Virtala stated that Control 2 had entered a proof-of-concept stage as of February 2023, with "detailed concepts on the game vision and all creative areas including the gameplay, narrative and art," and that Control 2 would expand the story and world of the original Control.[7] As of October 31, 2023, Control 2 remained in a proof-of-concept stage.[8]
In February 2024, Remedy announced that it had acquired full rights to the Control franchise from 505 Games, and that its future releases would be self-published, including both FBC: Firebreak (announced later that year) and Control 2. In August, Remedy announced that it had partnered with Annapurna Pictures, who would fund 50% of the cost of Control 2 in exchange for rights to expand Remedy's franchises into film and TV.[9]
By February 2025, Control 2 had entered full production.[9] As of August 2025, development on Control 2 had progressed to focusing on "gameplay, environments, and missions."[10] Control 2 was publicly revealed as CONTROL Resonant on December 11, 2025, as part of The Game Awards 2025, and its announcement trailer was released.
Notes[]
- Some aspects of CONTROL Resonant were teased by Remedy in previous games.
- One of the door symbols in the Oceanview Motel, the two broken concentric circles with a line sticking out from the bottom, is internally named motel_door_symbol_control2_a.tex, suggesting a connection to Control 2.
- In Control (with Ultimate Edition or with both DLCs), there is a secret cutscene from touching the side of Dylan Faden's cell in Central Executive which shows a vision of Dylan, as well as a series of quickly flashing images including the New York skyline bathed in the Hiss' red shade. This cutscene is only unlocked by fully clearing the game (involving all missions, finding all collectibles, and unlocking all outfits, in the base game and both DLCs; this also includes the secret cat ears in The Foundation).
- In The Lake House, the second expansion of Alan Wake 2, there is another hidden scene with Dylan, which showed further scenes of the paranaturally altered New York City, as well as the Control 2 door symbol.
