The Eagle Limited Train Car is an Altered Item recovered by the Federal Bureau of Control on May 25, 2015 from the Eagle Limited AWE disaster before being contained in the Investigations Sector of the Oldest House. It is the largest Altered Item contained so far by the Bureau on record.
Summary[]
Outwardly, the Eagle Limited Train Car is a CZ10 Vista Dome train car which was formerly part of The Eagle Limited passenger express train. However, the car's interior seems to be an alternate reality consisting of a repeating traumatic memory experience related to the item's origins. The item's containment procedures are relatively lax because its paranatural effects are only active when someone enters the train car; as such, the Bureau was content to simply place a few warning signs forbidding entry and otherwise leave it alone. Notably, while Bureau researchers concluded that the traumatic experience on loop inside the train car was created simply as an impression from its passengers' experiences, Jesse Faden instead associates it directly to the item itself.[1]
The train car was acquired by the Bureau on May 25, 2015, in the aftermath of the Eagle Limited AWE, in which a paracriminal organization derailed The Eagle Limited express train - causing 62 casualties and numerous injuries in the process - near Bloomington, Illinois, in order to artificially create an Altered Item. They were successful, and the result was the Eagle Limited Train Car, which was quickly found to show an Altered status by onsite Bureau agents and brought back to the Oldest House's Investigations Sector and placed in its AWE West hangar for study as part of a larger investigation into its related AWE.[2]
When the Shaded Emil Hartman breached containment in the sector in 2017, the Eagle Limited AWE area was abandoned, and the train car along with it. It wasn't until 2019 that the item was reencountered by the Bureau through Jesse Faden, who operated controls in its containment area to move it around and chase Hartman away from the location.[3] She can then enter the train car to gain insight on its history in the side mission Dead in its Tracks.
Trivia[]
- Jesse is instantly able to recognize the train car's model, which she claims is due to a book on locomotives she and Dylan read in their childhood. She also notes that she often hitchhiked on similar train cars later in her life.[4]
- Bloomington, Illinois is a twin city with Normal, Illinois, a name not unlike Ordinary.
- The Eagle Limited may be based on a real Amtrak train route, the Texas Eagle, which passes through Alton, Carlinville, Springfield, and Bloomington, Illinois on the way to Chicago.
