Biography
As a child, Jesse Faden lived in a town called Ordinary with her brother, Dylan. While in the city's landfill, the two discovered a slide projector which turned out to be an Altered Item, the slides of which opened doorways to "other places." Unknown, hostile entities emerged from the doorways, causing untold, tragic events, possibly killing their family. Jesse and Dylan were able to find help in the form of a mysterious being who emerged from the slides. This being helped Jesse and Dylan turn the projector off, preventing the hostile entities from emerging from them. However, at this point, Jesse and Dylan encountered agents of the Federal Bureau of Control, a secret organization assigned to deal with supernatural phenomena. Jesse fled, and Dylan was kidnapped by the Bureau. The FBC covered up these events, and no one believed Jesse about her story or Dylan's disappearance.

Early Life
For years thereafter, Jesse felt like an outcast, her view of reality different from others. Driven by guilt over her actions, Jesse sought to find her brother, and years later located the Oldest House, the FBC's headquarters, in New York City. Arriving at the Oldest House, Jesse sought to speak to Zachariah Trench, the Director of the FBC, about the whereabouts of her brother. However, at the same time, the Oldest House was suddenly invaded by a hostile, viral force of resonance known only as "the Hiss." The Hiss began to possess agents of the Bureau, turning them against the organization, and also killed Trench. In the chaos, Jesse picked up Trench's fallen firearm, the Service Weapon, to defend herself. Unbeknownst to Jesse, the Service Weapon was an Object of Power that chooses its wielder. Because she could wield it, Jesse was immediately declared to be the Bureau's new Director, a position she was wholly unprepared to fill. With Trench dead, Jesse was tasked with repelling the Hiss invasion and retaking control over the Oldest House.

Some time later, a group of bullies stole the Slide Projector and fell under the influence of a being known as the "Not-Mother," which turned the children into malignant beings. Jesse and Dylan survived the attack with the aid of Polaris, who aided them in closing the Projector, but the adults in the town did not believe them about the Slide Projector; Jesse implied that she resented the adults, and may have wished for them to disappear. The next day, every adult in the town of Ordinary vanished indefinitely.

The major disappearance caught the attention of the Federal Bureau of Control, who arrived in Ordinary to investigate the AWE. Jesse and Dylan showed Zachariah Trench and Casper Darling the Slide Projector; the Bureau proceeded to kidnap Dylan and take the Projector. Jesse fled and burned all slides but Slide 36, which was recovered by the Bureau; Trench kept one of the burned slides. With Dylan gone, Jesse, overwhelmed with guilt, spent the next seventeen years seeking him out, all while being covertly monitored by the Bureau. At the Oldest House, Dylan was groomed to become the next Director as Prime Candidate 6 or P6, while Jesse was monitored from afar as Prime Candidate 7 or P7. Jesse remained in infrequent contact with Polaris, who communicated with her telepathically.

Jesse is presumably one of the most powerful parautilitarians in Bureau history, able to use powers far beyond what has been achieved in prior testing at the FBC. She is the only known Director that has been strong enough to use the teleportation ability of Control Points, leading researcher Emily Pope to comment that she was not even aware it was possible.
Jesse possesses a host of paranatural abilities, which are believed to have originated with the unknown event in her youth. Throughout Control, she can expand upon these abilities each time she encounters an Object of Power, at which point she is transported to the Astral Plane and performs a ritual to gain control of that Object's ability.

Personality
Jesse has long been defined by the trauma she experienced in her youth, and is driven to seek answers and to rescue her brother from wherever he has disappeared to. She has severe trust issues due to no one believing her about her brother's disappearance, and feels like an outsider due to her different way of seeing reality. She also carries an enormous amount of guilt over fleeing when Dylan was taken by the FBC.

Jesse has been described as curious, witty, and sarcastic, "alternating between intense and insecure," and feels somewhat out of place in her new role as the Bureau's Director. She is considered a "breath of fresh air" for the Bureau, contrasting with its stern bureaucratic nature and redefining the meaning of her role as Director. She feels at home in the weirdness of the Oldest House, and over the course of her story, she begins to grow into her role and see the building as her home.
