Agent Kiran Estevez is a field agent of the Federal Bureau of Control who is currently stationed in Bright Falls, Washington.
Biography[]
Background[]
Estevez is an Agent for the Federal Bureau of Control. She was once married to her wife. However, Estevez eventually accepted a position in the Investigations Department for the Federal Bureau of Control. Due to the busy work duties and dangerous work environment, Estevez's marriage began to worsen. With Estevez choosing to remain working for the Bureau, her marriage never improved and resulted in her and her wife's marriage to end in divorce.
Bright Falls AWE Investigation[]
Several years after the large-scale Bright Falls AWE in 2010, and given the area's history of reoccurring Altered World Events, the Bureau established a permanent monitoring station along Cauldron Lake in order to keep an eye on potential future AWEs. Estevez was assigned to be the Lead Investigations agent in Cauldron Lake.
Estevez was the first Bureau agent to encounter the Shaded Emil Hartman, discovering the former psychologist inside the Cauldron Lake Lodge displaying the violent behavior characteristic of a Shaded Individual, after responding to a report of paranatural activity there. With assistance from the on-site Bureau research team, Estevez was able to capture and contain Hartman inside a Black Rock cell, after which he was transferred to the Bureau's headquarters in the Oldest House.[1]
Some time later in 2019, Estevez wrote to interim Head of Investigations Remy Denis, complaining about the repeated damage to the Cauldron Lake monitoring station, which the locals had led her to believe was caused by raccoons. She also remarked on the refusal of the research staff at the nearby Lake House facility to share their data with her, which was interfering with her ability to prepare for future Bright Falls AWEs.[2]
Taken Encounter in The Oldest House[]
In October 2019, Estevez was still stationed in Bright Falls and was thus among the Bureau personnel who survived the Hiss invasion due to being outside of the Oldest House. After Jesse Faden defeats a Hiss-and-Shadow-corrupted Hartman in the Investigations Sector, Frederick Langston calls to inform her that a new AWE alert had been detected in Bright Falls, only with a date placing it several years in the future. According to Langston, it may have been a glitch, but there was an Agent Estevez in charge of monitoring the site who should be able to provide them with further updates.[3]
The Lake House[]
On September 14 2023, during the events of Alan Wake 2, Estevez arrived in Bright Falls to investigate an AWE alert from the monitoring station located near Cauldron Lake and traveled to the Lake House in search of backup. Entering the seemingly abandoned facility, Estevez eventually discovered that the Co-Heads of Research, Diana and Jules Marmont had started competing projects - with Diana attempting to emulate the writing of Alan Wake, and Jules using paintings made by Rudolf Lane - with the ultimate (and unauthorized) goal of harnessing the reality-altering powers of Cauldron Lake for themselves. Ultimately however the Marmonts only succeeded in unleashing the Dark Presence, dooming the entire facility and its staff, and Estevez barely managed to escape with her life.
Cult of the Tree Case[]
After the events of the Lake House, Estevez continued her investigation into the possibility of a new AWE, arriving with her surviving team in the town of Bright Falls proper just in time to encounter the aftermath of the Cult of the Tree's attack on the Elderwood Palace Lodge. Upon hearing gunshots in the woods nearby, the FBC pursues only to discover FBI agent Saga Anderson and an unconscious Alan Wake himself under threat from a cult member. Estevez ordered her agents to detain the writer and surviving cultists, and to transport them to the Bright Falls Sheriff's Station for interrogation. She then hands Saga a document stating that the FBI's investigation was now under the jurisdiction of the FBC and dismisses her from the case.
Encounter with the Dark Presence[]
While Wake was detained, Estevez and members of the FBC remained within the Sheriff's Station to gather information concerning the ongoing AWE. However, shortly thereafter, the Sheriff's Station was attacked by Taken, resulting in many FBC agents and police officers being killed and Estevez suffering a major injury in her left thigh. Due to the Taken overrunning the station, Estevez locked herself within the station's records closet until rescue arrived.
Saga Anderson eventually arrived to the station and discovered Estevez in the closet. After killing the Taken roaming around the lobby, Estevez and Anderson cooperated in restoring power within the station. Estevez gave Anderson the cell keys so that she could speak with Wake. However, Scratch possessed Wake's body, forcing Anderson to confront Scratch in the back lot of the station. With the help of the equipment the FBC had brought to confront the Shadow, Anderson was able to fend off Scratch.
Back in the Sheriff's Station, Estevez, along with Anderson and Alex Casey, discussed their next plan upon the realization that Scratch had escaped the Dark Place. They concluded to use the Clicker to summon Wake from the Dark Place to be catalyst of his escape. After agreeing on this plan, the group separated to meet at Cauldron Lake to enact the ritual.
Dark Ocean Summoning[]
Estevez contacted agents within the area to provide stationary lights and a FBC containment chamber to be used to hold Scratch at the shoreline of Cauldron Lake. Estevez, Casey, Anderson, and the band members of the Old Gods of Asgard arrived and set up their equipment. Anderson ordered the band to begin playing their song to initiate the ritual, resulting in a battle against numerous Taken. After the ritual was complete, Scratch/Wake arrived to take the Clicker from Anderson. This skirmish caused Anderson to be thrown into the Lake before the Dark Presence being released from Wake and transferred into a new host, Alex Casey.
After Scratch/Casey escaped, Estevez stayed on the shore of the lake to speak with Wake. She informed him that Scratch can still be stopped before presenting Wake with weapons and her car keys to catch up to Scratch in Bright Falls. Estevez was last seen on the shoreline, contemplating on the events of the current AWE and watching Wake venture into the forest of Cauldron Lake to stop the Dark Presence.
