Before the Hiss Invasion[]
Rupert Wells was a part of Ranger squad Charlie-seven and was assigned a mission to map Quarry grid coordinates G-29, with a secondary objective of finding a route from the Threshold entrance in Maintenance to the Formation, which was unsuccessful. Later on Rupert and Kevin Horowitz discussed the mission with a debriefer, where they joked about seeing a mermaid before confirming that there was nothing but rocks.[1]
A Matter of Time[]
Wells was part of a Ranger squad tasked with retrieving a runaway Altered Item, the Ocelot's Anchor from within the Clock Threshold. However due to the Hiss the item had become extremely dangerous and it cornered the squad within a safe room; once it became clear the team could not contain the item, Horowitz ordered a retreat and sealed the safe room door to prevent the Anchor's escape into the rest of the Oldest House.
The team was then attacked by the Hiss and Horowitz was injured; Wells managed to get him to a Motel cord where he escaped the Threshold, while Wells went back for the others.
Director Jesse Faden finds Wells within the Sealed Threshold, where he is unsuccessfully trying to revive his squadmate Coleman. Wells and Jesse then fight their way across the threshold - finding another deceased Ranger, O'Neil along the way - to get back to the Motel cord and escape. They then travel back to Horowitz only to find he has been corrupted by the Hiss due to a damaged HRA. Wells and Jesse are forced to fight and kill Horowitz, after which Jesse directs Wells to the Executive Sector where his skills as a medic are sorely needed.
Later on, Wells can be found inside the safe room in Central Executive, tending to an injured Ranger.
Background Information[]
- Wells is likely a reference to author H.G. Wells, whose most popular work is probably The Time Machine. Like Horowitz, Wells' name was likely chosen as a reference to the Clocks Threshold.
